Alarm Management

Last updated: July 10, 2020

Access the Alarm List via the Alarm Summary widget or from here in Alarm Management.

  • From Menu>Alarms>Alarm Management, all alarms can be seen, from the whole organisation.
  • From the "Alarm Summary" widget, the alarms will display based on the current selection of the tree view.

Actions can be performed on any alarm, such as acknowledging or clearing an alarm from the system.

The list will display the Alarm ID, Status, Asset Name, Time, Alarm Level, Threshold, Breach Value, and Units.

  • Asset Name – Displays the description of the asset name. Clicking on the name will also take you to an Engineering Chart depicting the alarm level and readings from the asset.
  • Time – Displays the time and date when the alarm was raised.
  • Alarm Level – Shows the current Alarm status in text.
  • Threshold – The threshold is the set value that will trigger the alarm. The value is set through the "Alarm Configuration" page.
  • Breach Value – The value that triggered the alarm by going above/or below the threshold.
  • Units – Will display the unit value if known.
  • Config – Gives access to the "Alarm Configuration" if the user has the permission assigned to their group.

The list is comprised of the following key components:

  • Alarm – The number of the alarm, which is sequential to identify them.
  • Status – The current status of the alarm. The status indicator can show 3 icons:
    • The swinging red bell means that a point is in alarm and has not yet been acknowledged by a user.
    • The stationary red bell mean that a measurement has been in alarm and has been acknowledged by a user but not yet ‘Cleared’ from the Alarm list. See the section below for clearing an alarm.
    • The green icon means that an alarm has been ‘Acknowledged’ and ‘Cleared’.

When an alarm is acknowledged or cleared, the user must enter a comment . These comments are then viewable by clicking on the Detail icon.

Once a measurement is in the ‘Cleared’ state (i.e., in a Green state), it will be removed from the list the following day (i.e., the alarm list is refreshed every day to only display active alarms). The alarms are not discarded, but they are cleaned from the display and then stored in the Historical Alarm list.

  • Detail – Clicking on the detail icon brings up the details screen for that alarm. Acknowledge or clear the alarm here.

The Alarm Detail dialog presents the details, actions performed, and any comments entered when the alarm was acknowledged, by whom, and also any details of its closure. It will also include any SMS or email notifications that have been included.

Acknowledging and Clearing an Alarm

  1. To acknowledge an alarm, click the Acknowledge Alarm icon.
    • The detail section of the will be blank.
  2. Enter a comment in the Comment box, and select the Acknowledge action radio button.
  3. Select the priority (category the alarm relates to) and the action required.
    • Entering text in the Clear Alarm comment will do nothing at this stage, until after it is acknowledged.
  4. Press the Save button the make the change. This will alter the swinging alarm bell icon into a static icon, indicating that it has been acknowledged.
    • Clearing an alarm follows the same steps as above, with the exception of selecting the Clear action and entering text in the Clear Alarm comment box.
    • An alarm can also be acknowledged and cleared all at once by selecting the Acknowledge/Clear action radio button and entering text into both comments text fields.
  5. A cleared alarm will be displayed as illustrated here, and will remain on the Current Alarm list until the following day.
  6. When viewing the cleared alarm, it will display the comments as well as the user who acknowledged or cleared the alarm.

Performing a Bulk Action

If there are multiple alarms of a similar type that need to be acknowledged or cleared at the same time, they can be selected together and have the same actions performed against them.

  1. Alarms can be checked individually, or select all alarms by clicking the Select All/Deselect All link.
  2. Click on the Bulk Action link to bring up the Alarm Detail screen.
  3. The only difference is that the Detail section displays not the individual alarm, but an indication that multiple alarms are selected.
  4. Any further actions will be performed on all of the selected alarms.
  5. Refer to the Digital Twin Explorer guide for Configuring alarm levels on points.

View Historical Alarms

Press the View Historical Alarm button to view all alarms that have been previously cleared. A date range of alarms can be selected from the calendar.

The only operations that can be carried out on this page are to view the Engineering Chart for an alarm or to add a comment to a cleared alarm by clicking the bell icon. Any new comments will overwrite the old comments.
